11:00am on 22 Feb 2012 STAMP DUTY – back in 2000 a 2nd class stamp cost 19p, now it's 36p, and it's been deemed acceptable to charge up to 55p, which MPs are worried may come in by the end of the year, so get your Christmas stamps now! LIFE ON MARS – volunteers are needed for an experiment on Hawaii's Big Island, to live 4 months with volcanic rubble and dried food as they would on the planet. The closing date for applicants, who need to have a science degree is the end of the month. Topical tune (will it be David Bowie?) It was suggested, but I played Margaret from Stamford's suggestion of Come Fly With Me by Frank Sinatra STOP YOUR CHILD BEING A FUSSY EATER – vary your diet in pregnancy. The smells and tastes a baby is exposed to during its first few weeks of birth, and even in the womb are those that are most influential on its life PANCAKES – did you get some yesterday? I enjoyed one with bananas, nuts and toffee sauce at Barnsdale Lodge Hotel. There were pancake races across the country, from the Houses of Parliament, the choristers at Ely Cathedral, one in Leeds where children were having to wear hi-viz jackets, and of course the 29th in Caldecott, Rutland. Also research for QVC says 40% of adults don't know the basic ingredients of batter/pancake mix, 59% have dropped a pancake on the floor, and 1 in 8 has accidentally hit someone! Well done to the Melbourne chef who smashed his own record for a tower of pancakes, from 61cm up to 76cm, that's 60 stacked pancakes! SCARECROWS – saw a very individual one between Cottesmore and Exton yesterday at a farm near the kennels. It seemed like a mannequin standing on a car. Does it work?! BRITS – we heard from Ed from Deeping who took his girlfriend to the show courtesy of Rutland Radio & Mastercard, shame Adele will be forever known for being cut off on her speech and being annoyed about it! MILD – today highs of 12, tomorrow highs of 17 degrees! Rob 2:23pm on 21 Feb 2012 SO WHO'S HAVING PANCAKES THEN? Caldecott had its usual race and gathering at the village hall at 10, Gainsborough Court at Cottesmore has made making soup and pancakes for the residents, Beckworth Court in Empingham are serving the residents, and Bright Sparks Nursery in Empingham is doing pancakes today. Also heard Rutland Foods at Empingham have been making pancakes night and day for 5 weeks for the supermarkets across the country. Barnsdale Lodge Hotel are serving pancakes all day, I enjoyed a fabulous banana and cream one. WATER – fears of the worst draught for 35 years now that East Anglia, the East Midlands and the South East of England are all on draught alert, so that at least includes us. With many reservoir levels being low, including Rutland Water, we're being urged not to spend more than 4 minutes in the shower (even taking an egg timer in with us), and turning off the running tap when we brush our teeth. Takes you back to 1976 doesn't it? Topical tune? Thanks to Tracey in Uppingham for TLC's Waterfalls. LOSING WEIGHT SLOWS DOWN YOUR METABOLISM – new guidelines on how much you can expect to lose as you cut the calories have been published. It was thought cutting 500 calories a day would result in a pound of weight loss a week, now it's thought you should aim for half a pound a week DRIVING ABROAD? Take a breathalyser. From July, it'll be part of your car kit from driving in France, as well as a warning triangle, a first aid kit, fire extinguisher and those little triangles you stick on your headlights for driving on the right. These one use kits will cost a euro or two, and be available from ferry ports and tunnel terminals BRITS – Ed from Deeping goes tonight as our Rutland & Stamford ambassador. Hear from him tomorrow morning after he got close to the show BRITS WINNERS – we're playing songs from the big winners of the past tomorrow through the day, thanks to the Grainstore in Oakham Rob 12:56pm on 17 Feb 2012 RETIREMENT? One in eight women, and one in ten men is working past the age of 70. A lack of pension payouts is thought to have a lot to do with it. On average, a man retires at 64 and 7 months, and a woman 62 and 4 months, which is slightly later than it was a few years ago. Many people in their 50s questioned said they wanted to keep working past 65, but only part time. Have you retired, or would you never consider it? NEED SOME MORE OXYGEN? Simon Cowell's apparently using a can of the gas to stave off tiredness, stress and the ageing of the skin. Simon also has 3 baths a day, takes vitamins and drinks smoothies. Scientists say they doubt inhaling extra oxygen has much benefit – they say our bodies are saturated with the gas, and any benefit you feel wears off within minutes. Topical tune? Had a lot of suggestions of The Air That I Breathe, but I had to play 'What A Fool Believes' from the Doobie Brothers, thanks to Mark in Ashwell! DO YOU OBJECT FROM TICKING MISS ON A FORM IF YOU'RE NOT MARRIED? A council in a paris suburb has banned ‘mademoiselle' from its forms saying it's sexist, and now you indicate if you're male or female. I'm always tempted to tick ‘Doctor', and why is ‘Sir' or ‘Lord' never there? (not that I am any of these things!) KING SIZE CHOCOLATE BARS ON THE WAY OUT – any bar over 250 calories from Mars will not be made after 2014, as part of its commitment to healthier snacking DON'T WALK & TEXT - if you walk into something you're quite likely to fall over, as concentrating on your phone really upsets your sense of what's around you. A video of a news report in Ontario, Canada which features a woman behind the reporter who falls down some steps behind him whilst looking at her phone. New York has even considered passing a law to stop walking and texting. Have you walked into anything whilst concentrating on your phone? JAMES MORRISON – after his appearances in Leicester & Birmingham, won't play Leeds tonight or Nottingham tomorrow as Doctors have told him not to sing for now, due to a throat infection WEEKEND AFTERNOONS - I'm on both Saturday and Sunday from midday on Rutland Radio, and of course back on Monday from 6am Rob
I’ve been with Rutland Radio since day one, and for most of it waking up Stamford and Rutland. I love helping to start your day, and it’s great to get out and meet the listeners too, so if you’re up to anything special at work or in your free time, let me know. The strangest thing I’ve done here is probably be sent out in a boat blindfolded for the Friday Challenge, the most special is being at all the award ceremonies where we’ve been recognised, and there have been quite a few over the years. I live in Stamford, and I think this is a really special area to live and work in, it’s not just the beautiful surroundings, it’s also the people who live here too, and so many of them listen to us!
