Mulled Hot Apple Punch

If you or your guests are driving for New Year celebrations, then this is a perfect drink as it is non alcoholic, warming and full of seasonal flavours: Serves 6

1.5    litres/ 2 ½ pts apple juice
4 tbsp maple syrup or you could use runny honey
2 sticks cinnamon
6 whole cloves
6 whole all spice berries
peel of 1 orange, cut into strips
peel of 1 lemon, cut into strips


1.    Pour the apple juice and maple syrup or honey in a large saucepan.

2.    Place the cinnamon sticks, cloves , allspice, orange and lemon peel in a muslin spice bag. Secure with kitchen string and place the bag into the juice. ( Don't worry if you don't have  a muslin spice bag juice place all the ingredients into the juice, just make sure you remove them all with a slotted spoon before serving).

3.    Heat the pan until the contents are hot but not boiling.

4.    Remove the spice bag or loose spices from the pan.  Ladle the hot apple punch into cups or mugs and serve.
